The 720S is one of the great modern supercars and one of the quietest. McLaren built the M840T to be efficient, responsive, and compliant — and the rear silencer bolted between the catalysts and the tailpipes is the component doing most of the compliance work. It is large, it is heavily baffled, and it is by a wide margin the heaviest single piece of the rear exhaust.
This Z-pipe deletes it. In its place, two mandrel-bent T304 stainless tubes take exhaust gas from the factory cat-back flanges to the tailpipes on the shortest route the chassis geometry permits, using the tight double-bend routing the part is named for. What you get is the engine's actual voice — hard, metallic, urgent at the top of the rev range — plus audible turbo spool and wastegate activity that the factory system buries almost completely.
It bolts to OEM flanges, retains the active valve system, and requires no tune.
Why This Is the Highest-Impact Modification on a 720S
Owners consistently rate exhaust as the single most noticeable change they make to this car, and the reason is specific to the 720S rather than generic marketing. McLaren's acoustic engineering on this generation is unusually effective, which means the gap between what the engine produces and what the driver hears is unusually large. Closing that gap is dramatic in a way it simply isn't on cars that left the factory loud.
The 720S factory silencer is also heavier than the unit McLaren later fitted to the 750S, so the weight saving on this platform is correspondingly larger — and it comes from behind the rear axle, the worst place on any car to carry mass. (Insert your verified before/after scale figures; this is a claim worth substantiating precisely.)
Key Features
T304 stainless steel construction The chromium and nickel content in T304 resists salt pitting and corrosion in a way 409-grade tubing does not, and it holds its finish instead of going dull brown after a season of heat cycles.
Mandrel-bent tubing Every bend is formed over an internal mandrel so internal diameter stays constant through the radius. Crush bending pinches the tube at each turn — and on a short pipe with this much direction change, those restrictions stack up fast.
TIG-welded, argon back-purged All joints are hand TIG-welded and back-purged, leaving clean internal weld roots rather than the rough sugared slag that disrupts flow and seeds corrosion from the inside out.
Retains factory active valve control Normal, Sport, and Track modes continue to function exactly as designed. The character separation between them is preserved and considerably amplified.
True bolt-on fitment Reverse-engineered from a factory 720S exhaust and validated on a physical car. OEM flange positions, OEM hanger locations, OEM clamp geometry. No cutting, no welding, no modification to the rear clam, diffuser, or heat shielding.
No tune, no fault codes The part sits downstream of everything that influences fueling. No ECU flash, no check engine light, no fuel trim drift, no cold-start faults.
Catalysts untouched This system does not remove, bypass, or modify the catalytic converters or their housings. Emissions hardware remains fully intact.
Sound Character
-
Idle — deeper, fuller, more presence at the tips, still civil enough for a residential street
-
2,000–4,000 rpm — where you'll notice it most in daily driving; the engine gains a hard edge the factory system removes entirely
-
Above 5,000 rpm — substantially louder and far more aggressive, with induction and turbine noise no longer masked
-
Overrun and lift-off — clearly audible spool, wastegate flutter, and decel crackle
This is a large volume increase, not a subtle enhancement. Buyers who want added tone without added decibels should order the resonated version.
Configuration Options
| Version |
Description |
| Straight-Through Z-Pipe |
Maximum volume and flow. No internal attenuation. |
| Resonated Z-Pipe |
Perforated straight-through core with acoustic packing. Keeps most of the flow benefit while pulling out cruise drone and the harshest upper frequencies. |
| Brushed Finish |
Standard. Understated, matches factory hardware. |
| Polished Finish |
Mirror finish on visible surfaces. |
| Ceramic Coated |
Thermal barrier coating; reduces radiated heat into the engine bay and rear clam. |
Cabin Drone
Straight-through systems on the M840T commonly produce a resonance at steady cruise in the low-to-mid 2,000 rpm range that becomes fatiguing on long drives. Our resonated version specifically targets that band. If the car sees regular touring or highway use rather than weekend and track duty, order resonated — it is the more livable choice and the one we recommend for most owners. (Confirm the exact rpm window against your own testing.)

Not compatible with: McLaren 765LT (different quad-exit system), 750S, Artura, GT, 570S, 600LT, or 650S. Confirm before ordering if your car is a 720S Le Mans, Track Pack, or other limited edition, as some carry non-standard rear hardware.
Send your VIN before ordering if the car has existing aftermarket exhaust components, sport cats, a modified rear clam, or a non-standard diffuser.
What's Included
- Z-pipe assembly
- Replacement flange gaskets and hardware
- Installation instructions
- Certificate of authenticity and batch record
Keep your factory silencer. It is required to return the car to stock and is worth real money at resale — on a car this age, an unmodified-with-parts-retained history matters to buyers.
Installation
Requires a lift and rear clam access. Estimated shop time is [insert hours] for a technician familiar with the platform.
We strongly recommend installation by a McLaren-authorized technician or an experienced exotic specialist. The rear clam is expensive and easily damaged, and flange torque sequence matters for a leak-free seal. Damage or leaks resulting from improper installation are not covered under warranty.
Legal and Warranty Notice
Read before purchasing.
This product may not comply with noise regulations where you live, and fitting it may render the vehicle non-compliant for road use or cause it to fail periodic inspection. Noise limits vary by country, state, and in some places by municipality. Verify local requirements before ordering.
Exhaust modification may affect factory, extended, or approved-used warranty coverage on related components. Consult your dealer.
The buyer is responsible for determining legality for their intended use. Sold for [specify: off-road / track use only, or road use where permitted].
